Happy Holidays from the HEC Family to yours!

HEC Upward Bound hopes that you have a wonderful break. Enjoy your break from school.

Students on the last blog we talked about taking a break. Let's makes this clear:
TAKING A BREAK IS NECESSARY!
We are not saying do not work on scholarships or work or whatever you may need to do. We are saying set a time a day where you will "work." Whatever that means to you personally, but also take time to catch up on sleep. your body needs the rest. Some of you are the most active people we have seen. Take a slight break and recharge your body.

HEC invited two guest speakers to come speak with our students:

Ms. Nolan brought in Vanessa Hunt who graduated from Soldan with Ms. Nolan in 2010. She also brought Kevin Windham who graduated from Southeast Missouri State University with Ms. Nolan. Mr. Windham is actually one Ms. Nolan's firsts students.

Both speakers spoke about the ins and outs of college. They gave great advice to students about managing self and learning about new culture.
Mr. Winham spoke to parents about supporting students even when they act like they do not want the help. Mr. Windham's advice was "Parent involvemnt is the most important support a student can rely on. Also, parents send those care packages!"
Ms. Hunt spoke about being responsible and building your portfolio now. It does not have to be time consuming or even stressful. But take time to put your resume in a folder, make a copy of your certificates, diploma and just keep that folder in a safe place and refer back to it.

Hey guys! What's going on here?

What are you labeled as?

What is your label?

Saturday, December 3rd, Ms. Christina put different labels on each student's back and they had to partner up. The partners acted out what the other person's label said. Students were to guess what their label said.

Label... What does that mean? Each and everyone of us has a label attached to our name. When people think of your name something automatically pops up in their head that is attached to your name. Some of it is good. While other times its not so good. It could be a limitation. However, it is our duty to overcome those labels. We can change how people view us and how we view ourselves.
Students discussing how labels make them feel.

Students and their labels!
So what labels do you hold?  When people hear your name what do they think of? What labels do you hold on yourself? Ms. Christina had students make chains with their name in the middle and everything that describes them. This exercise showed how students view themselves. It was an opportunity for students to tune into who they are.
